The return of Fuming Mouth is one of the best things to happen to the heavy music underground in recent years. That’s not just because the band kicks ass, though they do. It’s also because frontman Mark Whelan was diagnosed with leukemia two years ago. He’s been through chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant, and now Fuming Mouth have resumed full-time operations. Last year, they released their furious and purposeful album Last Day Of Sun. Today, they’ve hit us all with another track.

A Toronto restaurant has been flooded with attention after it was mentioned in Kendrick Lamar’s Drake diss track “Euphoria.” On the song, Kendrick puts on a Toronto accent and mentions the Chinese spot New Ho King, which is on Spadina Avenue in Toronto. “I be at New Ho King eatin’ fried rice with a dip sauce and a blammy,” he raps.

Over the past year-plus, young London pop star PinkPantheress has faced some heavy criticism for her live-performance chops or lack thereof. To be fair, PinkPantheress emerged during the pandemic, and she got famous before she ever had a chance to perform live. It’s been a steep learning curve for her, and judging by videos from her recent gigs, she’s improving. She’s also working hard to ensure that her shows feel like events, whether that means bringing out Irish step dancers in Dublin or Ice Spice and Kelela in New York. While headlining the second Coachella weekend last month, Lana Del Rey brought surprise guest Camila Cabello to the stage, and the two of them performed Cabello’s recent single “I LUV IT.” Given that fans were hoping for a rumored Taylor Swift appearance, plenty were both baffled and disappointed when they got Cabello instead. Sprints gave us our very first Album Of The Week of 2024 with Letter To Self, the Dublin “garage noise” band’s explosive debut album. Today they’ve got a couple more songs out that keep that same energy. Black Box Sessions is essentially a new double A-side single, kicked off by a runaway train of a song called “Help Me, I’m Spiralling” and brought home by the magnificently intense “Drones.” I figured an EP called Black Box Sessions would just be live takes of Letter To Self material plus maybe a cover or something, so it’s a nice surprise that not only are these tracks new, they;re as vital as anything on the album. Earlier this year, Universal Music Group, the world’s largest record company, pulled its entire catalog from TikTok when the two companies couldn’t reach a licensing agreement. Soon afterward, UMG also removed its music publishing songs from the app, which really limited the music that could pop up in TikTok videos, though some users responded by using sped-up or slowed-down versions of Universal tracks. But now, UMG has announced that they’ve reached a new licensing agreement with TikTok, which means all that music is back up on the service.

We haven’t heard from Speed since 2022, when they released their EP Gang Called Speed, followed by the track “One Blood We Bleed.” Today, the Australian hardcore group is announcing their debut album, Only One Mode, and sharing the lead single “Real Life Love.”

Duane Eddy, the beloved and influential musical pioneer whose twangy playing helped establish the primacy of the electric guitar in rock ‘n’ roll, has died. The New York Times reports that Eddy died from cancer Tuesday at in Franklin, Tenn. He had turned 86 just days before his death.

Electric Light Orchestra’s Richard Tandy has passed away at 76. ELO leader Jeff Lynne announced the news on social media, writing: “He was a remarkable musician & friend and Iall cherish the lifetime of memories we had together.”

Yesterday, Kendrick Lamar fired back at Drake with a six-minute diss track called “Euphoria,” continuing a beef that has been playing out for a while now.

Kneecap have been building up the hype for their debut album, Fine Art, which arrives in June. The Northern Irish rap trio has shared the Grian Chatten collaboration “Better Way To Live” and brought it to Irelandas Late Late Show. They also released the title track, and now they’re back with “Love Making.”

Gracie Abrams’ associations are well-established at this point: daughter of J.J. Abrams, client of Aaron Dessner, key inspiration for Olivia Rodrigo, opening act for Taylor Swift. But did you know your favorite pop star’s favorite nepo baby can act? Abrams recently announced her second album, The Secret Of Us, and today she shared the video for its lead single “Risk.” It’s one of the more memorable videos of recent vintage, and the song sounds like a hit.

In their first incarnation, the Richmond post-hardcore explorers City Of Caterpillar were only around for a few years, from 2000 to 2003, and they only released one album. Still, City Of Caterpillar, along with fellow Virginia bands like Pageninetynine and Majority Rule, helped define the sound known as screamo. City Of Caterpillar reunited in 2016, and they released their second album Mystic Sisters in 2022. That means that the City Of Caterpillar reunion has now lasted a lot longer than the band’s first run.

Jeff Rosenstock and his band are headed to Brooklyn this summer. They’ll be playing at the Greenpoint venue Warsaw on August 21, and they might be playing there forever — if you let them. Rosenstock has announced that he’ll play “potentially infinite shows” at the venue. “If a show sells out we do another one,” Rosenstock wrote on social media. “Different sets every night.”

Amy Allen is a pop songwriter with an impressive amount of hits to her name, including credits on Halsey’s chart-topper “Without Me” and Harry Styles’ #6-peaking “Adore You.” (She’s also a songwriter on Sabrina Carpenter’s currently meme’d single “Espresso.”) On her own, though, Allen makes music that wouldn’t sound out of place on a stuffed Bandcamp page. Today, she’s back with a new song called “girl with a problem,” a woozy but sharp guitar track with a swirling hook catchy enough to betray Allen’s pop background.

I’ve long thought that Jessica Pratt’s music is the closest we’ll get to hearing what sound was like when we were inside our mothers’ stomachs. Cooing, bubbling, gleaming: Hers is the music of the intrauterine. Pratt plays as though she’s house-training sound itself, singing somewhere in the phonic region where meaning delays itself. Untethered highs and skidding lows, it must have been what the world sounded like in utero.

The Austin band Font have been together for a couple years now, and they have two songs to their name so far, “Sentence I” and “It.” In a few weeks, they’re headed out on a West Coast tour supporting Yard Act, and today they’re announcing their debut album Strange Burden, which will be out in July. New single “Hey KekuleI” is nervy and elaborately constructed, and it comes with a music video directed by the band and Blake Nelson.

Last summer, former Tarentel guitarist Danny Paul Grody released Arc Of Day, a tour de force LP that seasoned Fahey-esque instrumental folk music with notes of new age and ambient here, post-rock and slowcore there. Today he’s announced that this summer he’ll run it back with a companion album called Arc Of Night.

In 2022, Isabella Lovestory unveiled her debut album Amor Hardcore. Today, the Honduran pop and reggaeton singer is sharing the new song “Botoxxx,” and teasing a new LP coming this fall.
